These are less formal but usually more timely postings, provide the more human community connection with the international volunteers helping make RPG Research possible. Remember, we are all unpaid volunteers, doing what we can to help improve the overall human condition, so please be kind and supportive.
BECMI Basic D&D Now RPG Research's Introductory D&D Version of Choice BECMI Basic D&D Now RPG Research's Introductory D&D Version of Choice

As has been discussed in many of our weekly broadcasts, research meetings, talk shows, and board meetings, we haven't been happy with D&D 5e's introductory approach for people that have never role-played before. After years of experimentation, months of debate, and weeks of training, we're officially beginning the transition to use BECMI's Basic D&D as introduction to RPG instead of D&D 5e for ages 10+. For ages 4/5+ we're happily still using No Thank You Evil (NTYE).

by Hawke Robinson — last modified Jun 29, 2019 11:21 PM

From 1983 through 2015 it was just Hawke working with other organizations. Then just about 2 years ago we were at just volunteer number 9, now we have hit 70! And it is looking very likely we may hit or exceed 100 before the end of the year! And spanning multiple continents!

These are brief excerpts from some of my papers on the neuroscience of learning and relevance to role-playing games. Complete versions are available to Patreon supporters, research staff and RPG.Education students.

Variations of this happen so often that I generally don't bother posting about it anymore. Typically anywhere from once per month to once per week, I encounter something in the ballpark of these negative attitudes about role-playing gamers/gaming from the inculcated myths. But this past Friday was exceptional, with 3 separate families forbidding their children!

Looking for Specific Type of Live-Action Role-Playing Game Combination
by Hawke Robinson — last modified Mar 17, 2019 01:14 PM

A lot of larps are either more combat oriented or more freeform oriented. We're looking for something that is as close to a heroic, "good guys only", tabletop role-playing game, but includes moving around physically, but does not allow any physical contact, and isn't overly focused on combat. Anyone know of something actually published, with adventures, that fits these criteria? This is for atrisk and incarcerated populations.

Why TRPG or TTRPG? Why TRPG or TTRPG?
by Hawke Robinson — last modified Jun 25, 2019 04:11 PM

Until recently, it seemed pretty standard to use TRPG, but in the last few years, for some strange reason an increasing number of people are starting to use TTRPG with 2 Ts. Why?

Controversial Figures in Fandom - Persona Non Grata Research Resources? Controversial Figures in Fandom - Persona Non Grata Research Resources?
by Hawke Robinson — last modified Mar 10, 2019 01:04 PM

Once again someone has become (or apparently was for some time) persona non grata because of some terrible words or deeds. I'd never had any awareness of this person, but have seen over the past week a LOT of threads discussing. This lead me to wondering, is there anywhere someone outside of these insular community in-groups could find information about the controversial figures in various fandoms?

by Hawke Robinson — last modified Mar 18, 2019 03:42 PM

In our consideration of games research and community game offerings, we are trying to find the "right" Old West TRPG, that does not have magic or science fiction or other blended genres. Here is where we will post updates on our search.

Why "waste" so much time discussing the past? Why "waste" so much time discussing the past?
by Hawke Robinson — last modified Mar 26, 2019 09:48 AM

The past is still very present for many. We regularly meet people in the gaming community who do not understand why we "waste" time talking about all the misconceptions of the past regarding role-playing games and gamers. This is because outside of the fandom bubble, a very large percentage of people unfortunately still believe the negative myths and stereotypes. If we don't address those issues up-front and head-on, it is literally the difference between our programs being accepted or denied.

Removing Star Wars from our Tier 1 Game Offerings Removing Star Wars from our Tier 1 Game Offerings
by Hawke Robinson — last modified Feb 25, 2019 10:33 PM

Important update to the games we are offering from our level 1 Game Masters. We are removing Star Wars and replacing it with Doctor Who. This is mostly applicable to at-risk populations. For non-at-risk populations Star Wars may still be an option depending on the GM and session circumstances. Read further for more details...
