Internal Peer Review Process

Notes on our internal peer review process.

Disclaimer

All research undertaken and published through RPG Research becomes the "property" of RPG Research, while the original author(s) also retains their ownership and rights to publish anywhere else they wish.

We ask that authors wishing to publish their works developed and published through RPG Research first allow it to work through the publication process at RPG Research, before making it available elsewhere. Of course accommodations can be made on a case by case basis. For example for your thesis, dissertation, or other published works. However, please do not publish to any source that would cause a "claw back" legal conflict where the publisher (such as a journal) demands that we must take down your work published first (prior art) through RPG Research.

The whole goal is free and open access to this important information.

Researchers Schedule Recommendations

The following schedule is recommended for all RPG Research Volunteer Researchers:

  • Attend weekly training (at least one 3-hour session per week).
  • Monthly Blog Posting (internal peer review process).
  • 6 month (or custom) Formal Essay (internal peer review process, and potential external peer review).
  • Annual Minor/Major Research Project (internal peer review process, and potential external peer review).

All researchers are expected to attend one training session per week and post one blog posting per month.

All researchers are asked to try to post one research essay approximately every 6 months. Some researchers may want to take this more formal process more frequently (once per month, once every 3 or 4 months, etc.), or just once per year, depending on your existing workload outside of RPG Research, or your educational or professional goals or requirements.

We are all volunteers, so we are all understanding and flexible about all we do  being "best effort" and goals to strive for, not something that has punitive consequences for non-compliance.

Internal Peer Review Process

Submit first draft to highest volunteer number (newest) on research staff for review. When review complete, send back with notes to the author. Then after author incorporates the feedback, submits to the next lowest volunteer number.

Once work all the way down through the research staff numbers, the nearly final draft is submitted to Hawke. It will likely have one more return with comments.

Publishing release process: Blog Posting

Blog Postings are generally less formal postings and discussions about research concepts. They may be stepping stones toward a more formal essay or major/minor research project. For example, if one is planning on an essay or minor/major research project on "Bleed", the author(s) may each month write a series of Blog postings on their insights, thoughts, and progress working toward the more in depth research. One final draft is complete, it is submitted first to our Patreon supporters on the following schedule:

  • $25+/mo supporters - immediate access.
  • $10+/mo supporters - 1 week after $25 level supporters access.
  • $1+/mo supporters - 1 week after the $10 level supporters access.
  • General public - 1+ week(s) after all the Patreon supporters.

 

Publishing Release Process: Essays

These are usually literature review and meta-analysis reports, or types of research studies that generally not required to receive an Institutional Review Board (IRB) Waiver or oversight certificate, but are potentially considered for submission to open and semi-open journals (as long as they allow us to make the content eventually available freely to all publicly on our servers).

Undergoes the same internal peer review process.

May also undergo external peer review if submitted to external journal or other publishing outlet.

If not submitted to an external publisher, and choosing the (more frequently) RPG Research published approach, then all essays will undergo the same internal peer review process as Blog Postings.

 

Publishing Release Process: Minor/Major Research Project

We ask that all research staff are involved in at least one minor or major research project per year. This may be in conjunction with an overall RPG Research project that year, or your own research study that you wish to undertake utilizing our resources.

Some examples of prior annual research projects that RPG Research has undertaken include:

  • RPG for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing communities (2006-2012)
  • Northeast Youth Center "Extreme Medieval Sports" program (2007)
  • All 4 RPG Formats (SABM, ERPG, TRPG, LARP) Recovery Program for Brain Injury Patients (2013)
  • Adapted LARP for ASD & Neurotypical peers, 2 to 5 years old (2014)
  • Muscular Dystrophy & RPGs, through the MDA camp program we developed and ran using LARP and TRPG. (2017)
